Q        Can you please educate me abut why a cervix would be left in place during a partial hysterectomy? Is there a medical benefit? Why not just do a total hysterectomy?

A:       I have asked Dr. Miriam Zieman to indicate several reasons the cervix might not be removed at the time of a hysterectomy. I will get back to you soon.

| “The literature has been controversial as to whether there is any real benefit to a subtotal hysterectomy. Among the reasons people request it is to (a) preserve normal vaginal anatomy without potential for vaginal scarring, (b) preserve sexual function, (c) preserve pelvic support and continence. There may be more reasons.†|
